Perfect Presentations 1
Presentations are an everyday part of business life – they may be to convince your manager to support your project, it may be to clinch a sale with a new client – whatever the reason your message needs to be clear and your audience needs to take the action you want. There are some important cultural and linguistic issues when non-native speakers of English present in English – this workshop will look at these along with all other important aspects of presenting
We will focus on
| The structure of a presentation |
Is a presentation the same as any other presentation? Is there a fixed structure that works for all presentations, or there different structures that work best in different purposes? |
| The use of voice in the presentation |
Native speakers of English carry a very large proportion of their message through their voice, rather than the words and grammar they use. In this section we will look at issues of pronunciation and word stress to help you sound more like a native speaker, so that you can communicate your message far more effectively. |
How to involve the audience |
Have you ever sat through a presentation where you have been talked ‘at’ rather than talked ‘to’? It is obvious that if you want your audience to remember your message and take action then you need to engage them. We will look at some techniques of how to do this. |
How to avoid Death by PowerPoint |
It’s bad enough being talked ‘at’ but things get even worse when this is accompanied by endless slides. Should you pay attention to the speaker or the slides in this situation? Or neither? |
Key phrases in English to use when giving a presentation |
Giving a presentation in your own language is hard enough, but in a foreign language things are even trickier. We’ll look at some useful phrases to help you at certain points in your presentation and keep you moving if you get stuck for words. |
How to handle questions |
Every good presentation should provoke questions. A poor presentation may invite even more! So we will look at how you can handle questions without losing the impact of your presentation. |
Controlled practice of giving a presentation with feedback |
The best part – we put it all into practice and each participant can give a short presentation using the techniques that have been covered during the day. It is best if you bring with you an actual presentation you are working on - that way you have the chance to polish it before the big day! The trainer will give you feedback so you are clear where you need to focus in the future. |
